My mother had an incredible talent for making something lovely out of very little. As a depression-era child, nothing went to waste and everything that could be re-purposed was — without question.
Fortunately, some of that rubbed off on me. As I put the finishing touches on the Christmas decorations and get ready for my own holiday dinners, I’m laughing to myself as I see my mom’s creativity shine through in me now.
TRICK #1 USE WHAT NATURE PROVIDES, RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR
If Mom needed to spruce up the house for a special occasion or holiday, we were sent outside to find unusual twigs, evergreens, bittersweet, pinecones, firethorn or anything with berries. You’d be amazed what you can find to create a simple or elegant centerpiece, even if you have to mix in a few grocery store flowers. But, you don’t need to spend a lot of money — especially when your debit / credit card is being swiped enough this holiday season.
RIGHT: Simple door hanging vase filled with greens found outside. With the exception of a few pieces of seeded eucalyptus from Produce Junction for $3.50, this arrangement was free and took a few minutes to pull together. The fragrance of the evergreens, pine, bayberry and eucalyptus is a natural air-freshener too.
TRICK #2 LAYER COLOR AND FABRIC
Is that plain old table cloth just not working anymore? Check out the remnant table at the local fabric store and find a solid or printed fabric that will pull in accent colors in the room. With a few folds and an iron, you can quickly make a table runner for a dramatic change.
TRICK #3 USE EVERYTHING
Look at what you have left over — and look around your home. Find a bare spot and warm it up with pieces that are worth using rather than discarding. This was pulled together in five minutes. The velvet poinsettia flower was attached to a gift last Christmas and is just the pop of color needed with the sprig of greens on top of a foyer mirror.
TRICK #4 IMPROVISE — YOU MAY SURPRISE YOURSELF!
As you’re rushing to get ready for a party, there is always something that doesn’t want to cooperate — like the candles that are just a hair thinner than the candle holder. Try a piece of greenery from the centerpiece and tuck it into each candle holder. It actually fills the gap and holds the candles in place, while adding interest. Problem fixed!
TRICK #5 RELAX AND ENJOY THE MAGIC OF THE SEASON
It’s not about the perfect gift or the biggest tree, but spending time with the ones you love. PEACE!
